He wrote Reacher as super smart and super strong with no attachments to job or family as a result(and in an attempt to be different from the competition) which makes it hard to get him involved in plots. But if Reacher's personal space was violated he'd have no choice but to get involved.Ĭhild wrote Killing Floor when he had lost his job, had a wife and daughter, and was burning through his savings and probably burnt out from the toxic management he had fought and lost.
Joe is in the story and dies because Reacher has no emotional investment in the murder otherwise and Child couldn't see why Reacher would stick around. It was only counterfeiting because a few months prior to writing he had read a book about the history of American counterfeiting. He didn't know Reacher's name until he came to the first interrogation scene, he didn't know what crime was being committed until closer to the end.
Most of Killing Floor was written on the fly. Lee Child did a few pages of brainstorming about Reacher and the type of story and character he wanted to write then started writing.
